Rustic Chic Wedding: Cecília + Pedro

9 July 2014

As I said in the first post, I want to share beautiful, unique and special stories of love. What I didn’t realize was that right after the first post I would have a real wedding to show, with a sweet, kind bride and someone I became immediately very close to in such a magical way.

When I saw the photos of Ciça’s wedding I asked immediately if I could make a post about it here in Berries. She was so happy to do it, and agreed before she even saw the blog online. We sent emails back and forth and our connection only grew stronger. I had no doubt she would be the first real bride for B & L. And with the kind of rustic-chic wedding I absolutely love, too!

Cecilia and Pedro met in college. The friendship grew and after six months complaining about their respective partners at the time, they started dating. The first kiss happened at the end of an episode of Friends, their favourite show. They finished college and decided to move to England and do a Master’s programme together.

{Cecilia} “After splitting a tiny 30sq-metre apartment I realized we were made for each other. If we could share a 1m by 1m bathroom we could stay together through any trouble.”

They returned to Brazil and could not bear the thought of living apart again. They had to wait a long eight months to get jobs, but they saved their money and booked an anxiously-awaited wedding date!

{Cecilia} “I can safely say that my wedding party didn’t last just a single day. Preparations began at least a year before he proposed to me, and ever since we started dating in 2006 I knew he was the man of my life. I spent an entire year between 2012 and 2013 engaged in making a wedding as we wanted it! Something that matched our nerdy ways, that would be intimate and great for the family!”

{Cecilia} “As in our marriage, we would have kept it close and just invited me, my mother and my grandmother, but we made a point of reaching for our dreams in order to include charming and intimate touches in decorating the big day. We spent all year decorating mason jars with rendinha (?) and hessian. Grandma was making crochezinhos (?), Mami was sewing bags for souvenirs and I created all the art for invitations and name-places and such. It was a beautiful year! Byd (?) always gave his suggestions and vetoes but he left me very free to create the final identity for our day. We wanted people to feel welcome and so we used antique objects for the decor that belonged to our beloved family members who are no longer with us. We wanted them to see they were there participating, too, and watching over us. I also got pictures of all the weddings of people who were in our party and spread these photos through the room as portraits, as well as a “living wall” that we created for the guests to enjoy.”

Sweetest memories

“One thing that was marked in my heart were the tributes that our guests made for us. Our families and friends prepared a secret video that they showed us during the ceremony that sent us into floods of happy tears. At the end of the video they asked us to turn to them and everyone was holding little placards with words of love ... It was perfect! Even our friends outside who could not attend had a cameo in the video, and that thrilled us, too.”

Would you do it all again?

“I have no words to describe how perfect this day was. It was a blessed day. I tell all my single friends that it’s worth it to marry not only for the day itself, but for the preparation and attention to detail that will make the wedding day an unforgettable experience. I would do it again every year if I had the money! The investment is high but it is something that you and your loved ones will treasure forever in their memory and hearts.”

Advice for those who are planning their wedding

“The tip I leave to all brides is to make your day a day that will be pleasing for you and your fiance. We have to learn that first of all we are there to please ourselves. It is useless to prepare a marriage thinking about what others will think, so make it a day just for you and your groom. My motto and that of my husband at our wedding was to invite only those who really mattered to us. I didn’t want to be saying “Nice to meet you!” on my special day! We knew every one of our guests, which made them feel extra special. Invite only those who are an integral part of your life.”
